Historic pigments-list #1- as recorded by C. Cennini (14th cent.)
Cennino Cennini a Tuscan artist that practised a Giottesque atelier of fourtheen century, wrote a book about the way Italian artists used to paint, describing different techniques (fresco, egg tempera etc.). Dry pigments of historic list #1 have been mentioned in Cennini’s “The craftsman handbook”.They are original mineral and vegetable powders. The most famous pigment of this list is Lapislazuli blue.Lapis Lazuli is a semi-precious stone, coming from Badashkan mines in Afghanistan (mentioned by Marco Polo).It is by us reduced in powder and blue pigment is extracted following Cennini’s recipe.
