Our “BLACK MIRRORS” are made of an old black opaline glass.

The “MEDIUM ANTICHI MAESTRI” (OLD MASTERS MEDIUM - Item 3282) is obtained from a 17th Century formula, handed down to us by Marc Dalessio. Its components are Canada Balsam, Sun Thickened Linseed Oil and Turpentine.

The other new product which we are to introduce is “BALSAMO VENETO” (VENETO BALSAM - Item 3241). It is the true original Venice Larch Turpentine, very different from the one (adulterated) that can be usually found on the market. It’s a limited production-balsam, extracted from larch trees that grow in the Alps north of Venice. The “BALSAMO VENETO” looks a little darker than Canada Balsam, and it is in fact the one that was used by Venetian Masters of the 16th and 17th Centuries.

The key purpose for the “MACCHIAOLI” POCHADE BOX, unlike the other models presently on the market, is “simplicity” and “lightness”.

The “MACCHIAOLI” POCHADE BOX can be held like a standard painting palette, but it can’t contain paint tubes inside: therefore the needed colours must be picked and squeezed straight onto the wooden sliding palette (also included in the box) before going landscape painting.

As suitable painting supports can be used plywood panels, primed with true-gesso and rabbitskin glue (in size 20×30 cm., available separately at the price of € 4.70 each).

In setting up the pigments colour chart, we followed closely the list, which Cennino Cennini (a Tuscan artist, who worked as an apprentice to Agnolo Gaddi and attained to the traditions set down by Giotto) drew up in “The Craftsman’s Handbook”. In his late fourteenth-century manuscript Cennini mentioned and described the various techniques used by painters in the times of Giotto.
The pigments showed in the chart are exclusively of mineral or vegetal origin. Among them we gladly mention the precious Lapis Lazuli (quarried from the Afghan mines) and the Vermilion Original.
